NEW YORK CITY
New York City is known for its iconic & cinematic urban landscape, Woody Allen expressed "No matter what the season was, this was still a town that existed in black and white." However the city is changing and never has the phrase 'urban jungle' been so relevant. Neighbourhoods our reclaiming areas of New York's forgotten past and turning them into beautiful green spaces.
"One belongs to New York instantly. One belongs to it as much in five minutes as in five years." Thomas Wolfe

MANHATTEN HIGH LINE
The High Line runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street, between 10th and 12th Avenues.
The Manhatten High Line is an elevated linear park created on a section of the New York Central Railroad. The planting design created in collaboration with gardener Piet Oudolf is inspired by the self-seeded plants that flourished when the line was decommissioned. The High Line is an essential way to walk and view the city with its beautiful contrast of perennials, grasses and trees against the urban landscape. The Handbook photographed below can be found at the book store 'Printed Matter Inc.' 231 Eleventh Avenue. Which has an extensive range of creative design books.

Central Park is striking from whatever angle you look at it and is a tranquil spot to escape the hustle and bustle of uptown Manhatten. Hidden amongst the park is Shakespeare Garden; a four acre garden named and inspired by the English poet and playwright. The garden’s diverse planting scheme, including columbine, primrose, wormwood, cowslip, are all inspired by floral references mentioned in the Bard's work. The garden has the feel of an old English countryside dropped in amongst the urban backdrop of Manhatten.

The community garden movement in Brooklyn has thrived over the last ten years. Created by green starved urbanites fed up with the derelict abandoned neighbourhoods and drug problems they started digging and the first site at Pacific Street was born. Since then more and more of these gardens have opened. They are all mostly open to the public to walk round as well as holding talks and community events.
